Prior to the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the Amateur Athletic Union represented all United States Amateur Sports involving international competition issues. Congress adopted the act in response to criticism that the AAU had delayed progress of amateur sports in America and negatively effected the performance The United States in the Olympics. Although there have been amendments to the Amateur Sports Act (see second link), sports are now regulated by The United States Olympic Committee.
