The MBE is developed and graded by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). The MBE consists of an objective six-hour examination containing 200 multiple-choice questions, which are administered in two, three-hour sessions during which 100 multiple-choice questions are presented. The exam consists of questions in the following areas of law:
Each of the questions on the MBE is followed by four possible answers, from which you should choose the best answer. The questions on the MBE are designed to be answered in accordance with generally accepted, fundamental legal principles unless otherwise noted in the question. Since scores on the MBE are calculated based on the number of questions answered correctly, make sure you answer every question.
The NCBE provides online access to instructions for the MBE and subject matter outlines for the topics covered on the exam. MBE study aids, including two online practice exams, are available for purchase at the NCBE's online store.
NOTE: Beginning with the February 2015 administration of the bar exam, the subject of civil procedure will be added to the MBE. The duration of the exam will remain the same.
On the MBE you will have 1.3 minutes per question. That is 78 seconds, use this timer to track your performance.
