In the previous election, marijuana was legalized recreationally by eight states including the District of Columbia which accounts for almost a quarter of the U.S. population. Across the country, the legal status of marijuana varies from strictly prohibited, to medicinal use only, or fully legal and subject to limits like alcohol and tobacco with a minimum age requirement to consume or purchase.
