Alternative Healthcare in a Mainstream Nation: Home

An Informative Guide for Alternative Healthcare Professionals

This Libguide is designed to assist practitioners who may be considering or are currently practicing alternative medicine.  While each practice uses different terminology to describe their treatment, alternative medicine is generally used to describe products, therapies, and practices that are not typically associated with mainstream healthcare.  Examples of these practices include, but are not limited to, acupuncture, reflexology, herbology, and massage therapy.

What is Complementary and Alternative Medicine?

Complementary and Alternative Medicine ("CAM") includes products and practices that are not considered part of standard medical care.  Some of the most popular methods of these healing therapies include massage, acupuncture, acupressure, ayurveda, tai chi, herbology, and reflexology.
