Homeschool Law in the United States of America: Minnesota

You’ll need some basic information about the law if you’re a homeschooling family. That may sound intimidating, but don’t let it bother you. The law is not very complicated, and we’ve created some forms that make it even easier to understand. Thousands of other homeschooling families have sorted this out, and you will too!

This form is to be submitted to resident school superintendents by October 1 of each year, or within 15 days of withdrawing a child from public school. Revised August 2014.

Did you know that there are more options for your child than traditional public school? In Minnesota, parents have a wide range of meaningful school options for their children. Approximately thirty percent of Minnesota's K-12 public school students access some form of school choice, including Open Enrollment, Charter Schools, Magnet Schools, Online Learning or State-Approved Alternative Programs.

Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators (MÂCHÉ) is a statewide organization for parents who have chosen to home educate. MÂCHÉ serves Minnesota home educators year round, endeavoring to provide them with information and to act as an effective vehicle to facilitate and safeguard the Christian home education opportunity in Minnesota.

"School defined.For the purpose of compulsory attendance, a "school" means a public school, as defined in section 120A.05, subdivisions 9, 11, 13, and 17, or a nonpublic school, church or religious organization, or home school in which a child is provided instruction in compliance with this section and section 120A.24."

The board must take charge of and control all cocurricular school activities of the teachers and children of the public schools in that district held in the school building or school grounds or under the supervision or direction of the school board. The board must adopt rules and regulations for the conduct of cocurricular activities in which the schools of the district or any class or pupils therein may participate. All money received on account of such activities must be turned over to the district treasurer, who shall keep the same in the general fund, to be disbursed for expenses and salaries connected with the activities, or otherwise, by the board upon properly allowed itemized claims.
Teachers or pupils in the public schools of such district must not participate in cocurricular activities, nor shall the school name or any allied name be used in connection therewith, except by consent and direction of the board.
